CLTRSHFTRS was created by Angelique Kalani Axelrode and Shelton Torbert Jr with the support of Creative Wildfire, a grant from New Economy Coalition, Movement Generation and Climate Justice Alliance awarded to artists amplifying grassroots solutions to restore governance to the people and re-root economic decisions locally. CLTRSHFTRS and Lavish Studios, a local brand in Huntsville, Alabama, co-launched “The Circle”, a monthly meeting for local creatives to build community and knowledge share together.
CLTRSHFTRS presented at the “Resist and Build: A Creative Wildfire Artist Showcase'' (above) and at the “Allied Media Conference” (see in ‘Press’)
“A norm of capitalist markets is to disguise the human cost of the items that consumers purchase, and it is my goal with this project to subvert this type of faceless transaction that defines capitalist modernity by focusing on local creators who harness their unique energy and creative power to produce art… My hope is that these stories from this community of artists in Alabama will empower people to invest in themselves, join together, reclaim their neighborhoods and build a future grounded in community-oriented solutions. We cannot regress back into a society where artists and creators are unappreciated if they are not generating extreme profits, rather everyone should feel as though their art and their contribution to the world are valuable.”
